Help with getting rid of the "404 page not found" error

Hello there! I have just recently signed up for a Host1Free free hosting account and completed installing Wordpress, as I wanted to start a blog. Everything worked fine with the installation, but now I'm experiencing some problems when trying to visit the blog via a browser: whenever I type in its URL, which is Reiki Energia Armoniei, I encounter no troubles, but if I try to access a particular post/page/category, I always end up getting a 404 page not found error. What might be the cause for this? My blog is hosted on Box 11 and the user for this is reikie1. Thanks for the help!

Hello! You are using some SEF, but have you edited your .htaccess configuration after installing it?

Hey there! Well, I haven't modified anything in the .htaccess file yet. Should I do that now? And if yes, what has to be modified? Oh, and one more question: what does SEF mean? Search Engine Friendly ( as in SEF URLs )? Thank you!

Yes, I mean Search Engine Friendly. Well, usually when SEF is turned on, something should be modified in .htaccess, because SEF uses mod_rewrite. I think you should check manual for the plugin you are using on Wordpress.

Guess my hunch about SEF was right . Anyway, here's what I did: I had some SEO related plugins installed and activated and I decided to get rid of them, in order to see if this would solve the problem. Apparently, this trick didn't work.. The problem still persists. Got any other suggestions about what should I do next? Thanks.

When you disabled them links were still like /2011/10/25/ce-este-reiki/ ? Or they changed to php file with queries?

Yep, the links have the same format as you've mentioned, no changes occurred. That's how I set them to appear, from my blog's dashboard.

Ok. I'm not very good with WordPress, so I think you'd better ask WordPress support forums, because this problem seems to be more related to WordPress.

Ok, I think that I might have spotted the problem here. I have played around with the permalink structures in my blog's dashboard and noticed that, if I choose the default format ( like this Ce este Reiki? ) all the individual links to posts/categories/archives work well, the 404 error is no longer present. But if I switch to other formats, such as /year/month/day/post-example, the error pops up.

Furthermore, it seems that I do have to modify something in .htaccess, in order for everything to work properly. I will do that and see what happens. I'll let you know if I had any luck or not. Thanks for the help, though!

Try changing the permanent links to the default that is yourdomain.com/?xxx or something like that in your wordpress options and see if it works.

Edit: Didn't see your reply. Where is your .htaccess file? Try changing his permissions.
